A youth, identified as Ashraful Alam Parvez, also known as “Jajabor Parvez,” was detained from a room at Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, a female dormitory at Jahangirnagar University (JU). Parvez, a resident of Double Mooring, Agrabad, Chattogram, was visiting the university during its winter festival, Him Utsav.
The incident occurred on Saturday, January 18, around 11:30 PM. According to hall authorities, Parvez was found in the residential room of a first-year student from the Department of Drama and Dramatics.
Suspicious Entry
Witnesses reported that Parvez entered the hall disguised as a female, wearing a forehead bindi, a long tunic, and a shawl covering his face and body. His unusual attire and walking style aroused suspicion among nearby students, who subsequently informed the hall superintendent and requested a review of CCTV footage.
The footage confirmed his entry, and hall authorities, accompanied by the hall superintendent, found him in the student’s room. Parvez was immediately detained and handed over to the university’s proctorial body and later to the police.
Statements from the Involved Individuals
Parvez admitted to the incident, stating, “We are close friends of seven years. I came to the winter festival and had no place to stay. I entered the hall in disguise to meet my friend.” He also mentioned that he and the student share a mutual interest in Lalon’s philosophy.
The female student, however, described Parvez as a Facebook friend and said, “He came to the festival and had no place to stay, so I allowed him to stay in my room. We were not in any compromising situation.”
Contradictory Claims
When contacted, the student’s husband stated he did not know Parvez. This led to further confusion about the nature of their relationship.
Hall Authorities’ Response
Nadia Sultana, the assistant hall superintendent, said, “After being informed by the students, I went to the room with a hall staff member. We found the man sitting on the bed. I immediately informed the hall provost.”
Hall provost Professor Jahangir Alam added, “The matter was handed over to the proctorial body, and the CCTV footage is being reviewed. Strict actions will be taken against those responsible.”
Proctor’s Statement
Professor A.K.M. Rashidul Alam, the university’s proctor, confirmed the detention and said, “The youth has been handed over to the police. Legal actions will be taken against him under state law. The female student will face disciplinary measures under university regulations.”
The incident has sparked discussions on campus regarding security and disciplinary measures within university dormitories.
